CHAPTER 14

A cool breeze rushed through Shadow’s feathers as she soared above the Raven Tribe’s camp. Her sharp gaze scanned each and every bird below, eagerly searching for Aquila. She needs to know about Malik’s tricks right away, Shadow told herself, furious that her brother thought he could manipulate others into freeing him. I should also tell Arric, she thought, frowning. He’ll be heartbroken once he hears the truth. Poor Arric, he really did have high hopes for Malik.

Shadow clenched her beak and pulled herself into a hover. She had reached the camp’s border, and didn’t catch even a glimpse of Arric or Aquila. “Ugh, where are they?” she huffed out loud, plumage ruffling. This was urgent, and she was wasting time. The two birds in charge of the tribe needed to know the truth about Malik right away.

Maybe they’re out on a patrol, Shadow thought, sweeping the camp one last time. Once she was certain that Aquila and Arric weren’t there, she glided past the border and headed out into the territory beyond.

It didn’t take long before Shadow spotted them. Aquila and Arric were leading the patrol, of course. But instead of guiding the patrol through the forest, the group was perfectly still, perched together on the thick, red-barked branches of the trees. They were silently watching something. Shadow slowed down, not sure if she should disturb whatever the patrol was doing. Arric’s head suddenly lifted, and he quickly spotted her. Smiling happily, he waved a wing, beckoning for her to join them.

Shadow felt hot with embarrassment as every raven watched her approach. She felt even more uncomfortable when they started murmuring hushed greetings as she landed among them. These were the same birds who used to hate me, Shadow remembered, folding back her wings. But they’ve all changed for the better. It’ll be hard to keep on reminding myself of that, but I know that soon I’ll be able to become friends with them again. It’s just a matter of time.

Shadow smiled back at the patrol. “Hello,” she whispered, keeping her voice as quiet as theirs. “What are you all doing? Is everything okay?” Before any bird could answer, there was a rustling sound from below. Shadow watched as the foliage swayed back and forth. A sleek, red fox padded into the clearing. The fox sniffed the air a few times, then warily scurried down into its cave-like den, disappearing from sight. Tiny, muffled squeaks sounded from within.

The raven beside Shadow sighed. “That fox moved into our borders not too long ago,” he murmured. “We were going to drive her away, but didn’t when we realized that she was caring for her young.”

Aquila turned to Shadow and nodded, acknowledging her presence for the first time. “Now we’re just waiting for the pups to grow a bit more before scaring them off,” she explained, “while making sure that their mother doesn’t stray too close to the camp.” Aquila rose to her talons, no longer concerned about staying silent and motionless.
